Abbe Godwin, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Abbe Godwin, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Abbe Godwin was born in Jacksonville and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. She finished graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1975, and currently lives and works in Colfax.

Godwin was commissioned by the Raleigh King Committee to create a life-size sculpture for the Martin Luther King Memorial Gardens in south Raleigh. Measuring 6 feet and 2 inches tall, the sculpture stands directly on the ground instead of on a raised pedestal to ensure lifelike, human scale connectivity to the work. Godwin dressed King in his clerical robes to represent him as an apostle of God. The statue was dedicated in 1990.
